Mattia Riva was born in Varese Italy.

He took great interest in instrument-making when he was young, during his guitar studies, so after obtaining the diploma at the “Liceo Artistico” in Varese, he attended the “Civica Scuola di Liuteria” in Milan and achieved a degree in violin making and restoration under the guidance of Maestros Luca Primon (violin-making), Marco Piccinotti (varnishing) and Gabriele Negri (restoration).
After his studies he collaborated with M° Marco Piccinotti and he have worked as an independent violin-maker since 2003.

From 2000 to 2005 he attended several courses, among which the Specialized Courses in Restoration (by M° Carlos Arcieri and assisted by M° Gabriele Negri at the “Accademia Perosi” in Biella) but also other disciplines like the course in “Bow-repairing and bow-rehairing” (by M° Pietro Cavallazzi in Milan), “Varnishing techniques” (by M° Gregg Alf in Parma) “Set up and sound adjustement” (by M° Carlos Arcieri in Biella and M° Bruce Carlson in Milan - Seminar at the Civica Scuola di Liuteria) and “Reliefing techniques of historical instruments” (by M° Sharon Que in Parma).

In 2010 he won the first price (gold medal) at the 4° National violin making competition of Pisogne (violoncello).

In 2011 he won the first price (gold medal) at the 2° International violin making competition of Pisogne (copies section) with a violin copy of Giuseppe Ornati.

He is also a member of “A.L.I.” (Italian association of professional violin-makers).
